Frequently Asked Questions

Where is my nearest club?
Please see our section detailing affiliated clubs

How many nights a week would I need to train?
Two nights a week is optimum for a beginner, however some students are unable to offer this commitment. One night a week is adequate although you may find it will take longer to progress through the belts following the syllabus

Is it expensive?
No, or at least not compared to many other extra-curricular activities. Prices for lessons may vary slightly from club to club, depending on running costs. You don’t need to buy expensive equipment to start off with. You can start classes with shorts and Tee-shirts, or a track suit. When you decide that you want to do WJJF Ju Jitsu and to go for gradings, then it would be worthwhile getting a suit. These are called “Gi’s”. Other costs include gradings and badges. There are plenty of other things to buy if you wish. Please see our list of stock. Items can be ordered through the instructor of your nearest club.

Will my child get hurt?
Ju Jitsu is a contact sport, but it does have less instance of injury than a contact sport such as rugby or even cricket. One thing that should help assure any concerned parent is that ALL instructors in the WJJF have coaching qualifications and first aid in addition to their black belts. ALL our instructors are properly insured. No one attempts a technique beyond their capabilities and experience. Students are fully supervised at all times. As far as “does it hurt” is concerned, when the techniques are applied properly I would say no. Take a look at a class, see how many young people go on for their gradings. If they were getting hurt, they wouldn’t come back.

What order do the belts come in?
White, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown and black. A full syllabus is avaialable here
